Toowoomba residents living with a permanent and significant disability can now get support on their day-to-day way of life. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is assisting to provide persons with disabilities live with a better quality of life.

Since 2018, the NDIS has been implementing its services nationwide and has been assisting approximately 68,000 persons with disabilities. Toowoomba residents can now benefit from this as well if they decide to participate in the NDIS programme. They can apply as participants and receive the support provisions necessary to help them deal with their permanent and significant disability.

The NDIS programme values the input of its participants and empowers them by giving them control over their plans. Toowoomba residents are eligible to become an NDIS participant and can personalise their treatment plan, depending on their needs and goals.

What is NDIS?

The NDIS is a programme by the Australian government to provide support for persons with significant and permanent disabilities living in Australia. The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and has been active in all states and territories of Australia since 2013.

There are approximately 500,000 Australian citizens and/or lawful residents who have permanent and significant disability and are supported by the NDIS programme. The NDIS helps its participants ease the challenges brought about by their disabilities. Many of these NDIS participants are receiving support for their disability needs for the first time.

The NDIS extends support to eligible persons by funding the costs associated with the disability. In this way, participants can have an improved quality of life which they may not experience if the special needs brought about by their disability are not supported.

The NDIS provides support to persons with disabilities such as those that have intellectual, sensory, cognitive, physical, and psychosocial disabilities that may hamper the normal way of living. With NDIS, persons with disabilities can meet their personal goals, have their unique needs met, and live their lives as normal as possible despite the challenges that their condition may bring.

NDIS participants will need to collaborate with NDIS-certified professionals to discuss their needs and goals through meetings. Through these conversations, a personalised treatment plan will be designed. Participants can either develop their plan independently or with guidance. The ultimate goal of the NDIS plan is to address the participants’ specific needs and personal goals to make sure that they live as normally as possible.

A NDIS plan allows participants to choose a variety of support, services, and resources that the NDIS can fund to aid them with their disability. NDIS participants should be able to manage and eventually overcome the challenges of their disability for a better quality of life. The NDIS also provides its participants the skills to be independent, participate in the community, and join the workforce.

NDIS plans can only be carried out with the help of NDIS-registered providers, organisations, or individuals. They are the only ones who can provide support provisions, resources, and services to persons with disabilities enrolled in the programme.

Are you eligible to get support from the NDIS?

The goal of NDIS is to support persons with disabilities on the financial aspect of their condition so they may live as normally as possible. However, not everyone with a disability can be an NDIS participant and receive support. The NDIS programme is focused on individuals with permanent and significant disability. These individuals should meet the requirements below to be supported by the NDIS:

  • Must be 7 to 65 years old

  • Must be an Australian citizen, a permanent visa holder, or protected special category visa holder living in Australia

These two requirements should be met by NDIS applicants. Additionally, they should meet one of the three requirements below.

  • Requires support from another person because of permanent or significant disability

  • Requires use of special equipment because of permanent or significant disability

  • Require support at the present to reduce the need for future support

If an NDIS applicant did not meet the criteria, there are other government support programmes that they can enrol to such as Early Support Early Intervention (ECEI) for children under seven years old.

What are the various support projects of NDIS?

When a person with disability’s application to become an NDIS participant has been approved, they need to work with an NDIS-certified professional to develop their NDIS plan. They can design their treatment according to their needs, support, and resources that will help them with their disability to improve their quality of life.

There are three different types of support budgets for NDIS plans and choosing a plan depends on the needs of the NDIS participants.

Core Support Budget

The Core Support Budget is a kind of support that is focused on the participant’s day-to-day living condition. This support budget is considered the most flexible of the three NDIS budget plans. Participants can use their funding across four activities: assistance with daily living, consumables, assistance with the community and social participation, and transport.

Capacity Building Budget

The Capacity Building Budget is focused on meeting an NDIS participant’s long-term needs and goals by helping them gain independence and life skills. For this type of support budget, funding can only be used on nine approved activities: support coordination, living arrangements, social and community participation, finding and keeping a job, relationship building, health and well-being, personal development, improved life choices, and improved daily living.

Capital Support Budget

The Capital Support Budget is one-time support because of its higher cost. With this budget support, the participants can modify their home, transportation, and equipment to assist them with their special needs. There are two ways that NDIS participants can utilise the Capital Support Budget: through assistive technology or through home modifications.

These NDIS plans can benefit any resident in Toowoomba. To enquire about the support provisions for you, a family member, or someone you know, you can apply by calling the NDIA office at 1800 800 110 and make an Access Request.
