Individuals who are experiencing significant and permanent disability live differently due to the restrictions caused by their conditions. As time goes by, their condition can worsen if left neglected. However, it doesn't mean that their disability should be a hindrance in persisting in life, for there are funded supports to assist them at an early age to develop their full capacity and provide the support they need depending on their situation.

Through the NDIS support, residents and citizens of Perth, Western Australia who are living with a disability can get access to the support provided by the government by reaching out to NDIA and acquiring the NDIS plan through registered NDIS Providers. The NDIA has begun its trial in Perth way back July 1, 2014, in selected local government areas and the trial expanded on January 1, 2017, on other areas and benefited over 1,200 individuals on June 30, 2017.

The support provided by the NDIS can benefit the residents and citizens of Perth by signing up on the NDIS plan. Each support that is customised based on the individual's disability can improve their lives and their families' living conditions. To apply for the NDIS plan, the residents and citizens of Perth should be eligible based on NDIS set criteria.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is established to provide support across Australian states and territories for individuals who are living with significant and permanent disability and over 500,000 Australian citizens and residents are benefiting from this programme. The funding provided by the Australian Government is given to eligible individuals who are experiencing physical, intellectual, sensory, psychosocial, and cognitive disorders. Eligible children who are suffering from developmental delay are also assisted with Early Intervention Programmes.

The NDIS funding is a lifetime approach given to eligible individuals that is customised based on each participant's specific needs and provides support not only to individuals with a disability but as well as to their families and caregivers. This funding is essential to improve and change the lives of individuals with a disability to become productive and valuable individuals in society.

Different Types of Support Budget Offered by NDIS

Eligible NDIS Participants are given the choice to customise their NDIS plan according to their specific needs and individual set goals they want to pursue in life. The support that is granted to eligible participants will base on the required needs to assist them with their disability and enhance their capacity to achieve personal goals.

The NDIS has set three types of support budget that they suitably tailored according to individual and various needs of eligible participants. Listed below are the three types of support budget:

Core Supports Budget

The Core Supports Budget is design to lessen the difficulties that the individual's disability causes by providing funds for NDIS participant's daily needs. Through this, the eligible participants can improve their way of living and assist them to pursue their set goals. Core Supports is also the most flexible support budget. Participants can reallocate the budget on other categories other than the previous support they acquired. The different categories under this support are the following:

  • Consumables

  • Assistance with Daily Activities

  • Assistance with Social and Community Participation

  • Transportation

  • Capacity Building Supports Budget

The Capacity Building Support budget is non-flexible support that entails NDIS participants to only assign the provided funding to granted individuals support that meets the requirements of their needs and chosen category of support. This support budget aims to enhance the NDIS participant to improve their self-reliance to be able to manoeuvre in their daily lives and help them achieve their long-term goals. The Capacity Building categories under this support are the following:

  • Choice and Control

  • Enhance Daily Activity

  • Getting Employed and Sustaining Job

  • Enhance Health and Wellbeing

  • Enhance Home Living

  • Enhance Learning

  • Enhance Relationships

  • Enhance Social and Community Participation

Support Coordination, if required, also falls under the Capacity Building which is a fixed amount to bolster the participant’s abilities to fit in and administer the supports needed in their plan to be able to thoroughly engage in the community.

Capital Support Budget

The Capital Support Budget is the assistance given to NDIS participants that involve the provision of assistive technology or modifying the participant’s residence that can help alleviate the challenges brought by their disability. The fund provided under this support can only be allocated to the participant’s specified objective and the fund cannot be utilised to purchase other items.

  • Assistive Technology (e.g. wheelchairs, scooter, crutches, walkers)

  • Home Modifications (e.g. ramps, grab bars, bathtub lifts, chairlift, alarm systems)
