Positive Behaviour Support Plan Perth. The Australian Government has created the National Disability Insurance Scheme or NDIS to help Australians who are suffering from a permanent and significant disability. The NDIS believed that individuals who are living with a disability should not be left out in life. Thus, the creation of NDIS aims to provide and give support through funding for eligible NDIS participants to help them with their disability by providing them with therapy, support, and funds to supply their needs. The support provided will be tailored to each participant’s specific needs and goals in life to help them develop the skills they need to live independently and reach their full potential.

The NDIS was launched on July 1, 2013 and started legislated in the year 2014. The continuous roll out of NDIS has reached Western Australia on July 1, 2017, and fully roll out on South Perth on July 1, 2018. Citizens and residents of Perth, Australia who are eligible and seeks NDIS funding, may reach out through the Positive Moods as NDIS registered service provider.

Positive Moods psychologists are offering Positive Behaviour Support as one of NDIS services to residents and citizen of our city who are eligible NDIS participant and to their families and carers. The Positive Behaviour Support Plan is offered to children and adults who exhibit challenging behaviour that affects their daily lives. This support intends to provide the support needed for the participants, their families, and carers to help them figure out effective solutions based on the participant’s condition.

Positive Behaviour Support Plan of NDIS Perth

NDIS is offering Positive Behaviour Support Plan to children and adults who are experiencing distress with cognitive and intellectual capacity. A support plan is an evidence-based approach that is proven the most effective way in handling participants with challenging and problematic behaviour. The plan is an outline report of effective techniques that will be used on the participant after being evaluated by the therapist.

The support plan aims to help participants, their families, and carers identify the cause of the challenging behaviour. After the evaluation is made by the therapist, the plan will be written down to provide effective ways to manage the participant’s condition, and to reduce and eventually get rid of the problematic and challenging behaviours that the participant is exhibiting. The support does not stop with just laying out the plan, but also addresses the participant's disturbing behaviour through continuous consultation to know which method works and provide services that can help the participants develop the necessary skills to equip them to fully live their lives.

What is Challenging Behaviour?

It is essential to know and understand what behaviour an individual exhibits to help them get the urgent support they need. Challenging behaviour refers to habitual or repetitive behaviours that can affect an individual’s daily life and may put their selves or the people around them at risk. This challenging behaviour can hinder an individual’s function to navigate through their physical environment and to their community.

There are certain signs that an individual may exhibit challenging behaviour and it is important to identify these signs to get the support they need as soon as possible. The signs that an individual may need professional help are weak impulse control, weak social, communication, concentration skills, inability to comply and school refusal, anxiousness and unsociablity, dispute and feud with siblings, violent and alarming behavior, inability to adapt to changes, anger, aggression and depression, and toileting issues.

How is a Positive Behaviour Support Plan Provided?

The Positive Behaviour Support Plan is provided after the therapist at Positive Moods conducts the required evaluation to know what is causing the participant’s challenging behaviour. The therapists will then lay out a detailed plan of action base on the collected information about the participant's lifestyle, medical history, personal preferences, and communication needs. Since everyone has different needs and goals in life, the support plan will be tailored according to each participant's specific needs. In this way, the participants will be assisted to work on achieving their goals.

After the therapists have documented the participant’s support plan, they will continuously have a consultation with the participants, their families, and carers to discern which method is effective for the participants in further reducing their challenging and problematic behaviours. Other than that, there are services that the NDIS will be offering to the participants under the Positive Behaviour Support Plan that can help them navigate through their environment and equip them with the necessary skills to live their life to the fullest.

The services offered by NDIS under the Positive Behaviour Support Plan are the following:

  • Person-centred Therapy and Planning – The main goal of this service is for the therapist to have a deeper and genuine connection to the participants to be able to understand each individual's different perspective in life, their specific needs, set goals they want to achieve, their strength and weaknesses to fully create a support plan and treatment that is in line with their needs and preferences.

  • Conducting evaluation and interference – This is the first phase before availing of the support plan. Conducting the required evaluation on those who seek to avail of the support is essential to know which is causing the participants challenging and problematic behaviour.

  • Establishing the plan – After the participant's behavioural evaluation, the Positive Behaviour Support Plan will then be constructed including proactive methods, a plan of an act to alarming signs, and restraining negative behaviours.

  • Transforming the environment – The transformation of the participant’s environment, especially their residence is vital to remove any noise or a possible object that can cause the trigger to their disturbing behaviour.

  • Skills acquisition – Once the therapist has identified the root cause of the participant's challenging behaviour, they will incorporate therapy and training that can help them develop their communication skills, partaking in community activities, and replacing with positive behaviour.

  • Decrease the utilisation of restrictive measures – Since every individual has a right, participants living with disability who has been restricted to access the things that they want, given medication without their consent, and have been restricted of their freedom to access the outside world will be administered with positive methods to help them cope up and express themselves and eventually reduce and eliminate the restricted measures in their support plan.

  • Staff improvement – The staff under the Positive Moods are all registered professionals who are well-informed and equip in implementing strategies to properly handle participants with challenging behaviour.

  • Partnership with other individuals – To successfully layout and document a plan for the participants, their family, carers, and support providers are recommended to work together to give out the full information upon evaluation and in implementing the plan to give the utmost support that the participants need.
