Individuals who are living with challenging behaviours such as disruptive behaviours, withdrawn behaviours, violent behaviours, and inappropriate social behaviours may face difficulties in their daily lives brought by their condition. They may be restricted in performing daily tasks which affect their independence and make it more difficult for them to achieve their goals. Having a challenging behaviour is considered a disability that can negatively impact an individual’s life, as well as their families and carers. In addition, challenging behaviour is a serious mental health condition that needs immediate and professional attention. It is for this reason that the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers a Positive Behaviour Support Plan to the citizens and residents of Mackay.
Along with the highly trained mental health professionals of Positive Moods, the citizens and residents of Mackay who are exhibiting challenging and problematic behaviours can now avail of Positive Behaviour Support Plan at Positive Moods. The support is granted based on the NDIS eligibility requirements. Since many Australians suffer from a mental health condition, the support provided aims to help the participants, both children and adults, their families, and carers by reducing the impact of their disability and provide an evidence-based approach to manage their challenging and problematic behaviours.
What is Positive Behaviour Support Plan NDIS?
The Positive Behaviour Support Plan NDIS uses an effective, positive, and evidence-based approach to help children and adults who are exhibiting challenging and problematic behaviours to manage their condition. The support provided aims to assist children and adult participants to reduce and eventually eliminate their challenging and problematic behaviours. Additionally, Positive Behaviour Support Plan also aims to address the participants' challenging and problematic behaviours throughout the process to reduce their difficulties in learning and adapting.
Apart from assisting the participants to manage their challenging behaviours, the support also intends to assist the NDIS participants by providing effective techniques and therapy to help them enhance and build their skills to further eliminate their problematic behaviours in the long run. Some of the skills that the participants can develop and improve include:
Expressing and managing emotion
Communication and social relationship
Quickly adapting to changing environment
Compliance and following instructions
Control and concentration skills
To assure that the support is delivered effectively, Positive Moods' mental health professionals will work together with the participant, their families, and carers to assist them in addressing the difficulties brought by their condition. In addition, the convenience of the participants is also considered by providing support in the comfort of their homes or at places they usually stay. Thus, Positive Behaviour Support Plan is beneficial to improve the lives of thousands of Australians with mental health conditions.
How to Administer Positive Behaviour Support?
When administering the Positive Behaviour Support Plan, Positive Moods' highly trained therapist will conduct the initial process of assessment to determine the root cause of the participants challenging behaviour. Once the therapist has gathered the participant's information including their childhood, lifestyle, medical background, communication needs, likes, and dislikes, a detailed support plan will then be created based on the relevant information. Since every participant has varying needs, goals, and conditions, the therapist will assist in creating a support plan that is in line with the participant’s specific needs. By having a customised support plan, the participant’s goals can be surely achieved.
After the participant's support plan has been created, the therapist will work closely with the participants, their families, and carers, to continuously conduct consultation and evaluation to determine the effective methods on the participant's challenging and problematic behaviours. In addition, NDIS will also provide services under the Positive Behaviour Support Plan to assist the participant to manoeuvre in their environment and help them build essential skills to live an independent life. Participants will be guided to communicate their needs, positively replace their problematic behaviours and reduce the behaviours that can harm them and the people around them.
To better understand the objective of the Positive Behaviour Support Plan, the following are the services offered under this support, including:
Person-centred Therapy and Planning. To create an effective and beneficial support plan, this service aims for the therapist to build a partnership with the participants, as well as their carers and families. The goal of this service is to have a deeper connection and understanding of the participant’s outlook in life, needs, goals, strengths, and weaknesses.
Administering assessment and intervention. Before administering the support plan, the participant must undergo the initial step of assessment and intervention to determine the root cause of their challenging and problematic behaviour.
Creating the plan. Once the participants have undergone the evaluation, the therapist will create a recommendation to document the Positive Behaviour Support Plan. Included in the plan are the positive techniques, plan to manage alarming signs, and prevention of disturbing behaviours.
Environment modification. This service aims to modify the participants' environment, especially in their homes, to eliminate any possible factor that can trigger disturbing behaviour.
Skills development. Under this service, participants will also have the opportunity to improve and develop skills based on their condition. Necessary therapy and training sessions are provided to help them improve their social relationship skills, communication skills, and behaviour.
Reduce the use of restrictive measures. Since individuals living with disabilities have been restricted throughout their life by unwillingly taking medications and not having access to what they want and need, the support plan also aims to reduce and eliminate the use of restricted measures.
Personnel advancement. Positive Moods has highly trained and registered mental health professionals that can effectively administer proactive strategies to manage participants with challenging and problematic behaviours.
Cooperation with other groups. Achieving a successful treatment for the participants won’t be possible without cooperation. Their families, carers, and other support providers are encouraged to work closely from the initial assessment to the implementation of the support plan.
