NDIS Brisbane: Positive Behaviour Support Plan
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) believes that people with disabilities shouldn’t be left out on life. That’s why the NDIS provides a wide range of services and supports to answer the needs of patients in their home life, work environment, and social spaces. Over the years, the NDIS has provided more than 100,000 disabled people, under the age of 65, with the necessary interventions and information that can connect them to support networks and medical providers. One of the services that NDIS can provide is the Positive Behaviour Support Plan.
But where exactly does the Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) fit in the whole scheme of NDIS? Well, out of the three kinds of support budgets that can be funded in the NDIS plan, we have the Capacity Building Supports budget. This type is particularly concerned with building the patient’s skills to improve their independence and achieve their long-term goals. Under this category is the Improved Relationships, which a PBSP falls in. Here, the support aims to help the patient develop positive interactions and behaviour for their wellbeing and their relationships.
Positive Behaviour Support Plan of NDIS Brisbane
The PBSP is offered by NDIS Brisbane as an intervention for an individual who is facing difficulty with their intellectual and cognitive abilities. The plan aims to address the patient’s challenging behaviours, which can include verbal and physical aggression, damaging property, and inflicting self-injury. While such behaviours are usually unpredictable and often misunderstood, NDIS believes that they can be stopped in the proper environment and treatment. Through the PBSP, strategies and interventions are arranged according to evidence-based information. It aims to achieve the following goals:
To change certain aspects of the patient’s surroundings, especially in their home, to promote a more comfortable and positive atmosphere
To improve the patient’s lifestyle by connecting them to community events and social groups
To ensure that the patient forms meaningful, loving, and nurturing relationships with other people
To help the patient learn about their situation by employing effective communication strategies
To provide the patient with an environment that is not only beneficial to their recovery but is also fun and encouraging.
This plan was made possible due to the Disability Services Act of 2006, which ensures that Queenslanders with behavioural needs can have the chance to improve their quality of life. Under this framework is an assessment to determine the necessity of restrictive practices to protect the patient from any possible harm. It is necessary to note that the use of restrictive practices is done as a last resort, in the shortest possible time, to ensure the safety of the individual. Restrictive practices that are included in the Positive Behaviour Support plan are always authorised by the state and are reported to the NDIS Commission.
How does Positive Behaviour Support work?
NDIS understands that challenging behaviours are caused by a particular reason or purpose. This means that the plan will be structured according to the causes and triggers that are observed from the patient. It is the top priority for the plan to create methodologies that are not negative but to assist the patient to strengthen their skills through positive strategies during the treatment.
This plan does not focus on the patient alone; instead, it collaborates with their family, school, and support providers to compile information about the patient’s behaviours in different environments. Through this collaboration, the plan will work better in doing the following:
developing an accurate action plan that can respond to challenging behaviours when it happens
reinforcing appropriate behaviours to minimise and eventually replace negative ones
create a positive environment that is rid of antecedents and triggers, all while reinforcing practices that are beneficial to their physical and mental disposition
What services are included in the Positive Behaviour Support Plan?
The PBSP ensures that the interventions and strategies are fully based on research and evidence. NDIS Brisbane assures that all practitioners have undergone ample training and are fully qualified to handle complex situations. Most of all, the support providers see to it that the patient’s human rights are well-respected and prioritised in every situation. To achieve the goals that were formerly discussed, the plan includes these services to assist their patients:
How to make use of the Positive Behaviour Support Plan
To use the PBSP under Improved Relationships, the patient must give their provider as much information needed to build the NDIS plan. To gain access to the funding, they must undergo an assessment regarding their condition. During this part of the process, it is vital that the patient shares information about their feelings in most days, how such emotions influence their behaviour, and what factors can be improved in their life.
It is also important to disclose the existing supports the patient is receiving such as medications and therapist or counselling sessions. It would also be useful it the patient could have their physician/therapist/counsellor provide an outline of their symptoms, coupled with a letter of recommendation. These requirements would help the patient build a convincing case with the NDIS.
Apart from that, the patient must also consider if they fit these eligibility requirements:
Must be living in Australia and is an Australian citizen, Permanent Visa Holder, or a Special Category Visa Holder; and
Must be between the ages of 7 and 64 years old.
Additionally, applicants must also have one of the three following criteria apply to them:
Must need current support to reduce needs in the future;
Must need support from another person because of a permanent and significant disability; or
Must use special equipment because of a permanent and significant disability.
