Individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will have challenges performing daily tasks due to persistent difficulties in social relations, speech and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviours. ASD is a complicated developmental condition that makes individuals withdrawn from their environment, which reduces their functional capacity making it harder for them to achieve their goals. Thus, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers autism assessment to the citizens and residents of Ipswich living with ASD, who are aiming to improve their condition and change the lives of the participants, their families, and carers.
Through the help of healthcare professionals at Positive Moods, eligible NDIS participants, both existing and new, and are citizens and residents of Ipswich can now avail of the NDIS Autism Assessment that can assist in collecting information to be used as evidence to prove their disability and to verify their eligibility for NDIS funding. Also, the NDIS Autism Assessment can help in the planning process to make sure that the support plan provided by the NDIS is in line with the participant’s needs, goals, and unique conditions.
What is NDIS Autism Assessment?
The main purpose of the NDIS Autism Assessment is to assist in collecting essential information regarding the participant's overall functional capacity, which is vital in the planning process to determine the support and therapy that the participant needs. It also assists in determining if an individual is eligible for NDIS funding under ASD. However, the NDIS Autism Assessment will not replace the current medical therapists of the participants. Instead, it assists in collecting reliable and updated assessment report about the participant's functional capacity that is essential in performing daily tasks.
In addition, the NDIS Autism Assessment can assist in determining the participant's existing skills, activities they can perform independently, and areas they need support on. Since NDIS aims to improve the support provided to eligible Australians living with disabilities, the NDIS Autism Assessment is offered to new and existing NDIS participants to assure that the support plan is provided fairly and tailored to the participant’s needs, goals, and unique condition.
What are the types of NDIS Autism Assessment?
The types of NDIS Autism Assessment differ based on the participant's age and functional capacity to assure that the support is provided fair and in line with the participant's needs, goals, and unique condition. The following are the types of NDIS Autism Assessment, including:
Diagnostic Assessment
Designed for ages 2 years old and above, Diagnostic Assessment is used to determine if an individual has Autism or not. When conducting the Diagnostic Assessment, the assessors will interview the participant's family, perform clinical observation, evaluate the participant's functional capacity, provide a feedback session and a summarised report. After the assessment, a diagnostic letter will be given to the participants containing diagnostic conclusion, ASD severity level, general recommendations, the medical and developmental history of the participants, and their families.
Screening and Early Development Assessment
Conducted to children from ages 12 months to 2 years old, this assessment aims to assist parents who are concerned about their child's developmental progress. The Screening and Early Development Assessment is applied to evaluate a child's functional capacity in all areas and to assist in identifying if a child is exhibiting early signs of Autism. When conducting this type of assessment, assessors will give the parents a checklist, conduct clinical observation and developmental assessment, and provide feedback sessions and a summarised report. A diagnostic letter will also be given to the participants containing diagnostic conclusion, ASD severity level, general recommendations, the medical and developmental history of the participants, and their families.
Review Assessment
This type of assessment is offered to existing NDIS participants or those previously diagnosed with ASD. Designed for ages 4 years old and above, the Review Assessment assists in collecting updated information about the participant's functional capacity and if there are particular changes in their life like starting or finishing school. Conducting this type of assessment is essential to make substantial changes to the participants existing support plan depending on the changes in the participant's life. Essential assessment will be recommended to the participants depending on the changes in their life such as cognitive assessment for individuals who are starting to enter school.
How to Conduct NDIS Autism Assessment?
Since going through several sessions of assessment will be costly, the autism assessment will be provided to existing and new participants of NDIS, regardless of their financial condition. The autism assessment can last up to 1 to 4 hours. Having an ASD also means that the participants won't be at ease with meeting new people and being observed. Therefore, the participants, their families, or their careers can request several sessions of assessment to be conducted. They will also be given the right to choose the place and time to conduct the assessment.
To begin the process, participants must book an autism assessment with Positive Moods. When conducting the assessment, assessors will base their evaluation on the National Guidelines for Autism Assessment and Diagnosis. They will provide an assessment report and feedback regarding the findings, which will serve as evidence to determine ASD. Once an individual has been diagnosed with ASD, they can contact NDIS to get access to the support plan. After the NDIS plan has been drafted, the participants can contact Positive Moods to start receiving the therapy services. Existing NDIS participants can utilise the NDIS Autism Assessment if there are important changes in their lives, like entering school or the workplace and preparing to transition out of NDIS.
How to Access NDIS for Autism?
Having an ASD will certainly qualify for NDIS support. However, the support provided differs depending on the levels stated in the updated version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5). Based on DSM-5, ASD is categorised into 3 levels, including:
Level 1 - Requires Support
Level 2 - Requires Substantial Support
Level 3 - Requires Very Substantial Support
Individuals who are diagnosed with Level 2 or Level 3 Autism are given automatic access to NDIS funding and no further assessment is needed. However, those who are diagnosed with Level 1 Autism are required to go through further assessments to collect essential information that can determine their disability and verify their eligibility.
The following criteria are also required to access the NDIS funding, including:
Living with permanent and significant disability
Ages 7 to 65 years old (ECEI will be provided for children below 7 years old)
Residents and Citizens of Australia
Holds a Permanent Visa or Protected Special Category Visa
